New Box-Set: From Beginning To End

CD-Box Set Cover

In 1965 The End arose from the glowing embers of the earlier Tuxedos, Innocents and Original Topics, and like many of their contemporaries evolved into a psychedelic group. Along the way, they won the support and patronage of the Rolling Stones’ Bill Wyman, who produced their sole album for Decca, “Introspection” (CD2). He also co-wrote their signature tune, the psychedelic classic “Shades Of Orange”, although the band wrote the rest of their material. This 4 CD box set gathers together all of The End’s extant recordings, the material on CDs 1, 3, and 4 having only previously been released on vinyl in the ‘90s. CD 1 covers the early days from 1964 to 1967, CD 2 is the 1968 “Introspection” album with two bonus tracks, CD 3 features outtakes from the period 1968/69, while CD 4 rounds up the band’s recordings from 1969/70, before they reinvented themselves as Tucky Buzzard. This clamshell box set also contains a booklet with artwork by legendary designer Phil Smee, including photos and ephemera, a note by founder member Colin Giffin, and the band’s story written by David Wells.

CD1 – In The Beginning (1964-67)
CD2 – Introspection (1968-69)
CD3 – Retrospection (1968-69)
CD4 – The Last Word (1969-70)

Bill Wyman’s White Lightnin’ – The Solo Box – CD and DVD collection launching

Bill Wyman has revealed details of a special CD and DVD boxset releasing on June 15. White Lightnin’ The Solo Box features four of Bill’s albums and a special DVD.

This box contains all four solo albums by Bill Wyman, the first Rolling Stone to release a solo record. The first two (from 1974 and 1976, both issued on Rolling Stones Records) were made the help of a galaxy of musical friends like Lowell George, Dr John, Joe Walsh, Van Morrison, the Pointer Sisters, Danny Kortchmar, Dallas Taylor, Leon Russell, Bob Welch and Nicky Hopkins. The eponymous third album was home to Bill's 1981 big hit single "(Si Si) Je Suis Un Rock Star", while fourth album "Stuff" appeared in 1992, originally in Japan only. The albums are bolstered by 24 bonus tracks, four of which are previously unreleased (two demos and two 12" mixes). Also included is a DVD featuring a brand new interview with Bill conducted by David Hepworth, eight promo videos, and a variety of TV clips from the BBC archives. The 40 page booklet contains all the credits, the lyrics and new annotation by David Wells.

New CD: Bill Wyman - Back to Basics

New "Solo" Bill Wyman Album ; Back To Basics.
Release Date ; 22 Jun. 2015

1. What & How & If & When & Why
2. I Lost My Ring
3. Love, Love, Love
4. Stuff (Can't Get Enough) (Back To Basics Version 2015)
5. Running Back To You
6. She's Wonderful
7. Seventeen (Back To Basics Version 2015)
8. I'll Pull You Through (Back To Basics Version 2015)
9. November
10. Just A Friend Of Mine
11. It's A Lovely Day
12. I Got Time

Back To Basics does exactly what it says on the tin. It is unashamedly stripped back. The snappy lyrics are refreshingly audible and the instrumentation is clean, subtle and accomplished.
Back To Basics wears its influences on its sleeve – Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, JJ Cale – and there's more than a passing nod to Bill's own English background. It is that rare thing, a meld of styles and genres that actually work together - uplifting in a jaunty, dancey way and pensive in a bluesy, narrative way.
As might be expected from one of the world's best known bass players Back To Basics drives along with a rhythmic muscularity, and then slows the pace for more autobiographical lyric and melody. It is an album that warrants repeated play. It is also an album that's long overdue…
Bill Wyman's last solo UK album, Bill Wyman, was released in 1982. Back To Basics comprises only his fourth UK solo release. But Bill has not been idle of course. 31 years in the Rolling Stones, author of seven learned books, globally exhibited photographer, metal detecting expert with his own brand of metal detector, producer, composer for film and TV and founder of the very successful Rhythm Kings who release CDs and tour regularly - he has had a pretty full calendar. It was only when archiving old demos last year he realised he had around 60 songs he'd never released. He chose three songs that needed reworking and did just that. He put them together with a bunch of brand new songs and went into his studio to record them.
The CD comprises 12 tracks in total, eight of which are new songs. Musicians joining Bill in the studio include long time collaborator/guitarist Terry Taylor, Guy Fletcher (Mark Knopfler), Graham Broad and Robbie McIntosh while co-production credit goes to Andy Wright (Jeff Beck, Eurythmics, Simply Red).

On Bill Wyman's Back To Basics you get music that's the real deal...and you're all the better for it.

RIP Dallas Taylor (1948 - 2015)

Alan Merrill said about Dallas Taylor on FB:
"Sad news- RIP Dallas Taylor, one of the best drummers I have ever worked with. This is his playing on my song "At The Candy Shop" (Terry Taylor/Bill Wyman/Alan Merrill) recorded in south of France, 1977. An album title track for me in recent years. Dallas was a fun person to be around and so musical. He will be missed."

In case you hadn't heard...Dallas Taylor, Former Drummer for Crosby, Stills and Nash, Dead at 66

Here's an excerpt of an article that mentions Bill Wyman and Dallas Taylor playing with Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, and Muddy Waters (source: "Messin' with the Kids" ):
"Buddy and Junior continued to work as a double act but their peak activity on the Stones tour was two years in the past. But it was the Stones connection that brought about the session contained here. Bill Wyman was contacted by Montreux Jazz Festival organiser Claude Nobs, who asked him to put together a rhythm section to back Muddy Waters. It turned out that Nobs had also booked Buddy and Junior to appear, along with pianist Pinetop Perkins. Wyman recruited drummer Dallas Taylor, a lynchpin of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's band, and a guitarist, Terry Taylor (no relation), from rockers Tucky Buzzard, with whom he'd worked frequently in the past.

" 'So, the three of us went to Montreux,' Wyman told Willock, 'and we set up a rehearsal with Muddy. We got up there and met Buddy again, and Junior and Pinetop. We rehearsed two halves of two numbers. And Muddy said, "Great! That'll do." We went back to the hotel with Buddy and Junior. They said, "Look, we don't like our backing group. Would you like to back us too, on the first set?" Delighted! So we just went on, and we didn't really have a rehearsal with them either. We went on the next day and did the whole set. Buddy was just counting the times in and Dallas Taylor as really good, because he had to get it the first time, whatever it was'."

Find out more about his work and life here:
Dallas Woodrow Taylor Jr. (April 7, 1948 – January 18, 2015) was an American session drummer who played on several rock records of the 1960s and 1970s. He achieved some success first with 1960s band Clear Light, but is best known as the drummer on Crosby, Stills and Nash's debut album, Crosby, Stills & Nash (1969) and their follow-up with Neil Young, Déjà Vu (1970) and was given a front-sleeve credit along with Motown bassist Greg Reeves.

Taylor's wife confirmed the musician's death on January 18, 2015, according to a brief notice in the on-line version of Variety.

Bill Wyman´s Rhythm Kings at Notodden Blues Fest

Bill Wyman´s Rhythm Kings at Notodden Blues Club 29th Nov 2014

The next day I got to Notodden by bus and checked in at the only hotel in town. Went around town and then got myself changed and ready. Walked to the gig and got lost on the way but found someone who could explain the right way to the venue (google-maps-prints were useless). Got there in time and met some fellow fans from France, they stood next to me at the front. This gig was a kind of christmas-party for a company which spend a whole lot of money to get this great band to play in Notodden. The gig started very late and the setlist was changed from two sets to one and also threw some songs of the setlist ("Baby Love", "It´s raining" and "Crying in the Rain"). The concert went very well and Geraint got the crowd to do the Howlin´ on the right track. Had so much fun and danced a lot and afterwards went back to my hotel. It was a great way to end this day full of events.

B. Wyman´s Rhythm Kings at Greger´s Hamar, Norway, 28th Nov 2014
Bill Wyman´s Rhythm Kings at Gregers Hamar, 28th Nov 2014

The weekend after Oslo saw me traveling to Hamar, Norway. The flight was late like last weekend but I got to Hamar in the late afternoon. Decided to do some sightseeing the next day it was to dark that day. The hotel was good and the venue wasn´t that far away. Walked the venue and read that this was a sold-out gig! This venue was very small and already fully packed with people. Had the opportunity to talk to Dave South and Stuart and we walked in together. Stayed at the merchandise-table and talked to Spike and some fans and friends of the band. As the band took the stage the people applauded like mad. The band was in such a great mood. The band had a lot of fun and as they began to play the Howlin´ Wolfs-song. The whole band started howlin´! That was totally new to me and a lot of fun!!! Geraint started the Howlin´ over and over again. This evening was fun! Some pics taken from the last row of this venue can be found in the flickr-album above.

Bill Wyman´s Rhythm Kings, Drammen, Norway, 22nd Nov 2014
Bill Wyman´s Rhythm Kings at Union Scene Drammen, Norway, 22nd Nov 2014

After the gig in Oslo on the 21st Nov 2014 I had a good time and explored some places of Oslo and then got on the train to Drammen. Got to Drammen in time and walked to my hotel which was next to the venue. Had some time to explore the town and get changed and ready. When I got there the people were slowly moving into the venue and I decidet to get to the front and in front of Frank Mead and Nick Payn to get some other impressions of this gig. The concert started very late but the band had fun and the audience loved every song of the two sets. Talked with some fellow fans and exchanged the latest news. Mary Wilson took the stage and the audience went wild. She had fun and gave a great performance.
After the first half I went to the sound desk. The sound there was so good that it blow me away. Could not stand still for the rest of the gig and danced the whole time.
The pictures of this gig were okay so I put them up on flickr. Just click on the picture above. The set list can be found there too. Special thanks to Patrick for the setlists.

A brief review:
The bands' second German gig on this tour. I prefered to stay downstairs in the crowd and loved to take some pictures. Met some of my friends and talked to a lot of people about the latest news with fellow fans.
Right after the show, Bill and Mary made their fans happy by signing lots of items from the stage. A little later Bill came out of the backstage-area to sign even more autographs for the patiently waiting fans. The Bill Wyman´s Rhythm Kings carried on to Scandinavia next day where they performed a string of gigs (see the tour dates for that string of this tour here: Scandinavia Tour Dates/Pictures/Reviews .

Thank you to the fabulous crew! They were so nice to us.

B. Wyman´s Rhythm Kings at Uden, Heerlen and Eindhoven 2014

Bill Wyman´s Rhythm Kings at Markant Uden 01st Nov 2014
For the first time in a few month we saw the band again. The venue seemed a bit big at first, but the crowd grew a lot before the concert started. The sound was okay, but we stood at the front so we had both (on stage sound system and front of house) sound systems, so we could not hear the singing properly. Among the crowd were several familiar faces, like Adele and Jan, Rolf and Silke and Gudrun. We chatted and although said "Hello" to the crew after a long time and have a little chat with Dave South (crew boss)!
Bill stepped onto the stage and everyone knew that this will be a great night. He introduced the members of the band one by one and although told the crowd that Graham Broad could not make the tour and Henry Spinetti had only two days to rehearse 26 songs. He did a great job, but we although saw that Bev, Terry and Nick had to make the start and the ending of a song visible to Henry. We had a blast and got the setlist at the end. Thanks to Dave South!

Bill Wyman´s Rhythm Kings at Parkstad Limburg Heerlen 02nd Nov 2014
The second gig went even smoother than the first. The sound was alright and better than in Uden. Gudrun and I were in a different hall of this venue and rushed to the wright one at the last minute. The band was already on stage and the crowd got wild and danced and sang along throughout the concert.

Bill Wyman´s Rhythm Kings at the Musiekgebouw Eindhoven, 03rd Nov 2014
This was my second time at this venue. This time they only sold seats and my seat in the 4th row was actually very far away from the stage. Geraint surprised us: instead of telling his funny stories he did an impromptu version of Cilla Black's "Anyone who had a heart" which left Bill and the others speechless. The show was not sold out, but the band did their best to entertain the crowd. It seemed like Uden and Eindhoven were to close to each other to be both sold out show. We met with friends and had a blast and stood up for the last few songs and danced at the side.
Have a look at some pictures of the band in action (just click on the picture to get to the album):
