Der umtriebige Saitenhexer Jeff Beck ließ beim ausverkauften Konzert in der Fabrik sein Instrument sprechen - und es hat auch etwas zu sagen.

       

Hamburg. Einen Rod Stewart braucht Jeff Beck nicht mehr. Der blonde Schotte war einst der erste Sänger in Becks Band, damals in den 60er-Jahren. Wie kaum ein anderer Gitarrist kann er mit seiner Fender Stratocaster eine menschliche Stimme imitieren, deshalb bedarf der Brite keines Vokalisten mehr, der ihm die Schau stehlen würde. Wenn er zum Beispiel Curtis Mayfields "People Get Ready" als Instrumentalnummer interpretiert, gelingt es ihm, jede Nuance dieses religiös inspirierten Liedes mit Hilfe seines Instruments und diverser Effektgeräte auszudrücken. Jeff Beck lässt seine Gitarre sprechen und singen.

Mehr als zehn Jahre ist der inzwischen 66 Jahre alte Virtuose nicht mehr in Hamburg gewesen, entsprechend groß war der Run auf die Tickets. Seit Wochen war die Fabrik in Ottensen ausverkauft, selbst der zweite Rang wurde geöffnet, um genügend Platz für die Fans zu schaffen. Und Jeff Beck spielt sich durch alle Phasen seiner langen Karriere: von "Led Boots", 1976 auf dem Album "Wired" erschienen, über "Big Block" aus den 80ern bis in die Gegenwart zu "Corpus Christ Carol". Hochkonzentriert setzt er Ton an Ton, mit viel Vibrato bei den Balladen wie "Angel", mit atemberaubender Geschwindigkeit bei den schnellen Nummern wie "Rollin' And Tumblin'" von Muddy Waters. Bei diesem Blues ertönt die Stimme von Bassistin Rhonda Smith, ihr schwarzer Gesang steigt von ganz weit unten in ihre Kehle auf.

Außer der Bassistin gehören zwei weitere Musiker der ersten Liga zu seiner Band: Am Keyboard sitzt Jason Rebello, ein Jazz-erfahrener Pianist, der unter anderem zu Stings Band gehörte; Trommeln und Becken bearbeitet der stiernackige Narada Michael Walden, als Produzent eine Legende und schon in den 70er-Jahren Mitglied in der Jeff Beck Group. Die drei Musiker schaffen einen kompakten Sound und bereiten das Bett für die filigranen Improvisationen und Interpretationen des Frontmanns. Mit seiner Technik und seinem einzigartigen Klang ist er mindestens auf eine Stufe mit Eric Clapton zu stellen, dem er Mitte der 60er-Jahre bei den Yardbirds nachfolgte.

Jeff Beck covert "A Day In The Life" von den Beatles, dafür erhielt er einen Grammy, in "I Want To Take You Higher" von Sly Stone lässt er wuchtigen Funk-Sound aus den Lautsprechern knallen, den Gitarristen Les Paul würdigt er mit "How High The Moon", mit der Ballade "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" aus dem "Zauberer von Oz" begibt er sich bis in die 30er-Jahre zurück und selbst Puccini findet sich in seinem Repertoire. Auf das süßlich-kitschige "Nessun Dorma" als letzte Zugabe des 95-minütigen Auftritts hätte man zwar leicht verzichten können - es bleibt der einzige kleine Schwachpunkt eines herausragenden Konzertabends. Es ist ein gutes Zeichen, wenn man sich dabei ertappt, die schwierigen Soli mitzuspielen. Selbstvergessen. Auf der Luftgitarre.

The gig was in a huge tent. Tunø is a Danish island in the Kattegat close to Samsø. The island covers an area of 3.52 km² and has 113 inhabitants. It is administratively a part of Odder municipality. It is connected to Denmark's Jütland mainland by ferry service from the harbour on the east end of the island, near the town of Tunø By, to the town of Hov.

 The concerts took place in the main tent which offered jazz, rock, country anything you like. Seats available but there was a stand-up area front of stage. The tent was nicely decorated with flowers and other funny stuff. We noticed many professional photographers among the audience. Danish journalist and radio man Lars Paaske was also there. Albert and the boys were on rather late, starting their set with YOUR BOYS. The set list was a bit different and is posted below. Needless to say that their performance was outstanding. Thundering applause for Peter's OH DARLING by the enthusiastic Danish audience. Last not least thumbs up for the busy crew who worked hard to get the gear loaded. As this was their last Euro gig until September it was simply a MUST to be there ! Unfortunately it drizzled over night, it got cold and damp in the morning. The sunrise was beautiful, but we were desperately waiting for the long delayed ferry to take us back to the Danish mainland. Our journey home was something else, and I'm sure we'll never forget this hell of a trip.
