Where the Bass Player Went Off To

By MARC MYERS
Not a day goes by without Bill Wyman bumping into a Rolling Stones fan who thinks he's still the band's bassist. Mr. Wyman quit the Stones nearly 20 years ago and has been leading the Rhythm Kings since 1997.

"Taxicab drivers, people in the streets—they all ask about the Stones and when we're touring again," Mr. Wyman said on the phone from his London home. "When I say I'm no longer in the band, they seem stuck for a moment. It's all very sweet. I was with them for 30 years, wasn't I." (Darryl Jones has filled in on bass ever since.)

Mr. Wyman leads the Rhythm Kings.

A new Bill Wyman - Interview

Bill Wyman talks bass, Rhythm Kings and The Rolling Stones

"I'm lucky - I've been in good bands"

Joe Bosso, Fri 23 Sep 2011, 12:20 pm BST

"Most musicians play clubs and dream of being in stadiums," says Bill Wyman. "I was the other way around. Everybody thought I must've been crazy to leave The Rolling Stones, but it was something that was on my mind for a while. It was something I had to do."

When the bassist quit The Greatest Rock And Roll Band In The World in 1992, ending a 30-year association that produced some of the most vital recordings of the post-Baby Boom Era, he wasted little time in assembling a new band, Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings, one which would allow him to perform the music he loved in more intimate venues.

"For a long time in the Stones, I missed having contact with the audience," says Wyman. "Standing there with your bass in a football field, you become isolated. With the Rhythm Kings, the band is totally engaged with the people who've come to see us. I quite like it."

Being an ex-Rolling Stone has its perks, of course, as evidenced by some of the stellar A-list names who have popped up on Rhythm Kings recordings over the years: Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Mark Knopfler, Nicky Hopkins, Peter Frampton and fellow former Stone Mick Taylor - all have played with Wyman and the Kings on their four studio albums.

And those discs now make up the five-CD boxset titled Collectors' Edition Box Set, due out 25 October, which neatly packages Wyman's stunning examination of 20th Century roots music, along with originals that suit the same period to a T.

MusicRadar sat down with Bill Wyman to discuss the Rhythm Kings and a few of the iconic musicians who have played with the band. In addition, we talked about bass playing and gear, as well as that other group he spent some time with.

For thirty years Bill Wyman was the bass player of the most famous rock band in the world, the Rolling Stones. Lesser known is the fact that he has been photographing everything from his band mates, to other celebrities, to landscapes and nature.

Though they are artfully composed with tremendous attention to detail, colour and composition, Bill never considered his own works “art” though they indisputably are. A small part of this archive has been published in five successful books which he has released since 1990, and there have been a few exhibitions in America, Holland, Monaco and the South of France, where Bill has maintained a residence since the 70’s, but the photographs have never before been exhibited in London - until this Autumn.

In this exhibition of prints, most on display will be in colour and most have never been exhibited before. With his unparalleled access, the portrait photos form a perfect counterpoint to the mass imagery, which has spread throughout the world’s magazines over the decades. The photos not only chart the years during Bill’s tenure with the Stones, but also feature friends from the music industry, where his subjects are captured in rare, relaxed and unguarded moments.

Like the undiscovered work of an outsider artist toiling away for decades, it is as if a fully matured, massive body of work has appeared untouched, unseen and from nowhere. It is a truly profound and insightful record of the past 45 years encompassing everything from celebrities to landscapes and the natural world.

‘I am extremely pleased to have kept my photographs since I started taking them in the mid-1960’s.’ Bill says. ‘And I’m very proud that a selection of these will finally be exhibited in London, where I was born and brought up.’

Accompanying the long-awaited London exhibition there will be a publication with text by Hans Ulrich Obrist, world-renowned Director of the Serpentine Gallery Museum in London. In addition to a boxed set of 40 prints of early Rolling Stones material from the 1960s-80s, there will be an assortment of large format photographs depicting landscapes, nature, and personalities from music, art and film.

Fifty percent of the proceeds from sales of a portfolio of 40 will be donated to Outset Family, a philanthropic initiative dedicated to supporting art education programs including The Art Room, ‘Get the Message’ at Camden Arts Centre and Paintings in Hospitals. Outset Family is part of Outset Contemporary Art Fund.

Rolling Stones - A tour in a pipeline???

A tour in the pipeline? Rolling Stones make rare appearance together sparking rumours of a new project

By Alanah Eriksen

Last updated at 3:54 PM on 8th September 2011

With Mick Jagger's new band and Keith Richard's autobiography, the Rolling Stones barely have time for new projects together.

But the ageing rockers made a rare appearance together yesterday, sparking rumours a new tour or album was in the pipeline.

Frontman Mick, 68, guitarists Keith, 67, and Ronnie Wood, 64, and drummer Charlie Watts, 70, were spotted leaving an office in London.

And the band still showed they had star power, nearly 50 years after they were formed by Mick, Keith and former members Brian Jones and Ian Stewart.

A fan was seen smiling enthusiastically as he touched Ronnie Wood on the shoulder as he was ushered into a waiting car.

A photographer is seen snapping away.

Ronnie, who was in The Jeff Beck Group and Faces with Rod Stewart, still refused to dress his age, donning a velvet blue blazer paired with skinny black jeans.

Keith joined his bandmate in the young-dressing stakes, donning one of his trademark headscarves underneath a stylish hat.
He was flanked by a burly tattooed man, thought to be his bodyguard.
Mick wasn't dressed like his usual flamboyant self, wearing a simple navy blazer, jeans and sneakers.
And Charlie also opted for casual-wear.

Rumours circulated in May that talks over plans for a 50th anniversary tour and album next year had broken down amid Mick's launch of a new 'supergroup'.

SuperHeavy includes singer Joss Stone, Bob Marley's son Damian, Eurythmics star Dave Stewart and A.R. Rahman, the Indian musician and composer who won two Oscars for Slumdog Millionaire.

Jagger was also said to be furious over the way he was ridiculed in Richards’ best-selling autobiography, Life

The memoir, which Keith was paid £4.3million in advance for, has sold more than a million copies.

Meanwhile all 17 of the Rolling Stones performances on The Ed Sullivan Show are to be released on November 1.

It includes several performances that have never been released, including their final appearance on the variety show on November. 23, 1969.

Andrew Solt, of Sofa Entertainment, said: 'The best Rolling Stones TV performances are on these shows.

'On the concert films and on other shows you don't get the same production values, and here the sound is as good as the visuals.

'Groups knew they would appear in front of 35 million people so they rehearsed and made sure they would look good before doing on. Knowing they were playing live on TV made them do their best.'

Bill Wyman - Box Set - Coming in October

Bill Wyman Box Set Coming In October
9/08/2011
.
Bill Wyman's post-Rolling Stones work with The Rhythm Kings has been collected for a 5-disc box set that will be released on October 25.
The collection features Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Nicky Hopkins, Mark Knopfler, Paul Carrack, Peter Frampton, Georgie Fame and Andy Fairweather-Low. Here are the details we were sent:

This five-disc collectors' Edition Box Set, which gathers four studio albums Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings cranked out between their 1998 debut Struttin' Our Stuff and 2001's Double Bill, is a revelation, particularly for those who have yet to discover the rich body of work of Wyman's low-profile/high-revving band. Given the expansive array of material the Rhythm Kings tackle in these recordings, one even might think of this collection as a pocket history of 20th century roots music, with original material written in the spirit of the old songs serving as the connective tissue.

A founding member of the Stones, and half of what may be rock's best-ever rhythm section, Wyman remains a refreshingly humble and down-to-earth character. The notion of an egoless rock star may seem oxymoronic, but Wyman turns out to be the ultimate embodiment of just that. "I don't need an ego," he says. "I never did. Charlie Watts is the same. Charlie didn't give a sh*t about any of that. We'd just do it, get on with it and go home, or back to the hotel. And I'm still like that."

It's this quality that has drawn a jaw-dropping procession of virtuosos to play alongside Wyman in the context of Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings whenever their busy schedules have permitted. Scattered here and there through these 66 tracks are the likes of Eric Clapton, Procol Harum's Gary Brooker, fellow former Stone Mick Taylor, Mark Knopfler, Peter Frampton, Paul Carrack, Chris Rea, acclaimed jazz guitarist Martin Taylor, master percussionist Ray Cooper and, in some of their final recordings, George Harrison and Nicky Hopkins. These greats have slipped seamlessly into the sturdy yet willowy framework provided by core members Wyman, drummer Graham Broad (best known for his work with Roger Waters), singer/guitarist Andy Fairweather-Low (Eric Clapton), legendary singer/organist Georgie Fame, renowned roots guitarist Albert Lee, vocalist Beverley Skeete, horn players Frank Mead and Nick Payn, pianist Geraint Watkins and guitarist Terry Taylor, who doubles as Wyman's primary collaborator on the originals.

As he looks back on the last 20 years of his life and career, the affable, perennially youthful Wyman peppers his conversation with wry laughter as understated as his playing style, onstage demeanor and personality. "In '91, the Stones had a big business meeting," he begins. "They were about to sign the contract with Virgin, and I said, 'I won't be doing that, 'cause I'm leaving.' 'No you're not,' they said. 'You can't leave.' 'Well, I am.' Bless them, they didn't believe me for two years; they left the door open until they were ready to go out on the '94 tour. And in late '93, Charlie and Mick came 'round and said, 'Is it definite? Have you left?' I said, 'I left two years ago.'"

"So then I thought, maybe I should do some music on the side, but not heavy; I don't want to have to worry about charts, image and all that crap. It's not gonna be a career move — I'm just gonna do it for the fun. I got together with my mate and right-hand man Terry Taylor, and I said, 'Let's do something.' We were gonna just do a blues duo and call ourselves the Dirt Boys, and we started to rough up ideas. And then, when we decided to go into the studio just for a couple of days, we thought it might be nice to have a drummer, and, of course, a piano player would be good. So I just phoned up a few mates."

His first calls were to Fairweather-Low (who'd been part of Wyman's '80s group, Willie & the Poor Boys, the stylistic forerunner of Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings), Graham Broad and pianist Dave Hartley, who went on to work with Sting. "We went into the studio, and I said, 'We'll cut anything that meets my fancy,'" he continues. "I dug out a list of early music that I liked and thought might be good to do. It ranged from Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Fats Waller, Ray Charles, into the early rock 'n' roll, like Louie Jordan and Cab Calloway — all the way back to the '30s and upwards. So we went in for three days and cut eight tracks."

The numerous live-performance videos uploaded on YouTube by fans show various configurations of Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings but a palpable spirit permeates every clip. All the musicians appear to be totally blissed out, none more so than Wyman himself, reveling in the experience of simply being one of the guys, making music with friends. "We have a ball," he says. "There's nothing nicer than doing a two-hour show and seeing the entire audience standing and applauding through the last few numbers — and they keep doing it for another 10 minutes after we go back to the dressing room. And it's night after night."

"I discovered that I could write songs in the old styles, because I would analyze the way they did the arrangements, the way the instrumentation sounded, the way people sang and the slang they used for the lyrics. And in the end, the track, when we'd finish it, would sound like a song from the '30s, '40s or '50s. It's almost like an archeological dig into music. But there are very few bands that have the depth and versatility of my band in doing a total mixture of music. We play blues, reggae, soul music, gospel-y stuff, jump music, early rock 'n' roll, we do '70s stuff, it's a whole mixture. We can do anything."

As prodigiously talented as Wyman's band is, it's almost as if Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings have been hiding in plain sight all these years. Part of it has to do with Wyman's aversion to globetrotting — one of the primary reasons he left the Stones after 31 years of it. He's now happy to play anywhere — as long as the band can get there by bus, train or ferry, meaning no further from home than Eastern Europe. "We don't seem to go to another level, because I just don't travel anymore, which disappoints the band a bit," he acknowledges. "But that is not what we do it for. We have a really nice time playing music that grabs us and we go home with smiles on our faces, just like the audience does. That's really all it's about."

And in purely musical terms, that's more than enough. Bill Wyman just can't help keeping it down to the real nitty-gritty as he continues his single-minded career path. "Whether it's been the right direction or not, I don't know," he reflects. "But I've enjoyed it."
