The Stones’ bass guitarists sets the tone telling the audience it will be an evening of rock ‘n’ roll, blues, pop, Motown and more besides. "We want you to go home with a smile on your face," he grins and that is exactly what happened - the audience was still buzzing and singing as they spilled onto the street. They even joined in an impromptu serenade of Happy Birthday To You for Wyman.
There are jokes and antics, a near unimaginable range of music from a dozen eras performed by some of the very best in their fields, together with an explosive performance from guest star, former Supreme Mary Wilson.
The songs and music just comes at you from the stage in a non-stop wave of the familiar, the not so familiar and some fine interpretations of classic rock and blues. It is an excellent recipe for a feel-good night of music and song.
For the record, Wyman’s Rhythm Kings include Welsh keyboard wizard - and Bob Dylan’s favourite pianist - Geraint Watkins, legendry Leigh-born jazz and blues organist Georgie Fame, guitarists Albert Lee and Terry Taylor, drummer Graham Broad, saxophonists Frank Mead and Nick Payn and vocalist Beverley Skeete.
Each one of the Kings could carry a show on their own. Together they provide all the complimentary and most of the contrasting options you could wish to hear.
Even after five decades Fame - still better known by this fellow Leyther (Leigh-born) as Clive Powell - defies the years and passing music styles. His duet with Wilson on Billie Holiday’s iconic Stormy Weather is worth the ticket price alone, as is the duet, with Lee and Skeete singing the Everley Brothers’ classic, So Sad - not far behind is Wilson belting out Dancing In The Street, Martha & the Vandellas’ Motown anthem.
While all this is going on Wyman remains the consummate professional, rarely taking centre stage but doing what he does best - providing the bass base for others to build on.
It’s now almost 15 years since Wyman formed the Rhythm Kings and there seem little sign of their popularity waning - nor the songs they choose. Long may it continue. The music and their individual interpretations are far too good to fade away and you will wait a long time to see a band enjoying every minute of a show and doing what they do so well - play great music and entertain audiences. Rollings Stones Bassist feiert Geburtstag
Als er am 24. Oktober 1936 in London zur Welt kam, hieß er noch William Perks. Unter dem Namen Bill Wyman schrieb er als Bassist der Rolling Stones Rockgeschichte. Nachdem er die Band 1993 nach mehr als 30-jähriger Mitgliedschaft verlassen hatte, etablierte er sich als Musiker mit diversen Soloprojekten, außerdem als Bluesforscher, Kunstkenner, Buchautor, Philanthrop und Gastronom.
Immer ein wenig ruhiger als der Rest der Band stand Wyman bei den Stones stets im Schatten von Mick Jagger und Keith Richards. Für seine Beiträge als Songschreiber – er behauptet, die Riffs von „Paint It Black“ und „Jumpin‘ Jack Flash“ stammten von ihm – sah er keinen Penny.
Das undatierte Archivbild aus der Zeit zwischen 1963 bis 1969 zeigt die britische Rockgruppe "Rolling Stones" in ihrer ursprünglichen Besetzung (von rechts im Uhrzeigersinn): Charlie Watts, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Bill Wyman und Mick Jagger. Heute, über drei Jahrzehnte später, verkörpern die inzwischen über 50 (!) Jahre alten Musiker immer noch den Mythos von "sex and drugs and rock 'n roll", die Tourneen sind ausverkauft.
Als Bill 2009 auf dem Lahnsteiner Bluesfestival mit dem „Blues-Louis“ ausgezeichnet wurde, begründete die Jury das wie folgt:

Er hat ein Buch über seinen Freund, den Maler Marc Chagall herausgebracht - aber er ist eigentlich weder Zeichner noch Autor. Der Mann ist vom Beruf Rocker. Bill Wyman, bis 1993 das Multitalent am Bass der Rolling Stones, ist in Ehren ergraut - und wird am 24. Oktober 75 Jahre alt.

Was die wilden Stones um Frontmann Mick Jagger und Gitarrist Keith Richards in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren gedacht haben, weiß man nicht so genau. Jedenfalls vermutlich nicht, dass sie es einmal schaffen, über 65 Jahre alt zu werden. Zu ungezügelt war das Leben um Sex and Drugs and Rock 'n' Roll.
Wyman, der sich als Autodidakt zunächst das Spielen auf der Gitarre, später auch am Bass und auf der Zither beigebracht hatte, war zumindest bei den Drogen schon immer etwas zurückhaltender als seine ein paar Jahre jüngeren Band-Kollegen. Schon bei der Gründung der Stones 1962 war der damals 26-Jährige aus dem englischen Örtchen Penge verheiratet und hatte ein Kind.
Das hielt Wyman aber nicht von einigen wilderen unter den 31 Jahren bei den Stones ab. Er selbst bezeichnete sich einmal als „Sexmaniac“, als „Sexnarr“. „Ich hatte nur ein oder zwei Frauen - die aber jede Nacht“, soll er einmal gesagt haben.
Mitte der 1980er Jahre lernte er die damals 14-Jährige Mandy Smith kennen - er heiratete sie, als sie 19 war und verließ sie nur wenig später. Inzwischen ist Wyman in dritter Ehe mit Suzanne Accosta verheiratet. Beide haben drei Töchter - und sein ältester Sohn Stephen ehelichte Mandys Mutter. In Wymans erstem Buch über den Bandalltag der „Stones“ sind viele der wilden Geschichten nachzulesen - vom Bassisten akribisch festgehalten.
1993 hatte Wyman genug. „Ich habe ein Vierteljahrhundert Jumpin' Jack Flash spielen müssen, und ich hatte mir, ehrlich gesagt, den großen Spaß immer etwas anders vorgestellt“, sagte er einmal dem „Spiegel“. „Die letzten zehn, fünfzehn Jahre meiner Mitarbeit bei den Stones ist kein einziger (großer Hit) mehr dazugekommen, das war schon frustrierend.“ Keith Richards Regel, dass ein „Stone“ die Band entweder im Sarg verlässt, oder hinausgeworfen wird, war Wyman egal.
Bei den Rolling Stones war fortan Darryl Jones für die durchdringenden Bass-Soli zuständig. Wyman hatte besseres zu tun. Er gründete nicht nur die von der Kritik inzwischen hochgelobte Band The Rhythm Kings - mit der Spitzenleute wie Chris Rea und Eric Clapton auftraten. Auch seinen Geburtstag wird Wyman mit den Rhythm Kings auf der Bühne in Manchester verbringen.
Der Musiker engagiert sich auch für Betroffene der Krankheit Multiple Sklerose und ist als Geschäftsmann erfolgreich - mit Restaurants der Kette „Sticky Fingers“. Seine große Liebe gilt jedoch seinem Fußballclub Crystal Palace - und der Kunst.
Eine Galerie in der Londoner Künstler-Hochburg Hoxton zeigt seit einigen Tagen Wymans Fotografien. „Ich hätte nie gedacht, dass meine Fotos einmal in einer Ausstellung zu sehen sein werden“, sagte Wyman jüngst der „Sunday Times“. Inzwischen braucht er einen Autofokus. „Mein Augenlicht erlaubt es nicht mehr, dass ich selbst scharf stelle“, sagte er vor einigen Tagen der BBC. In seinem Archiv hat Wyman mehr als 20.000 Aufnahmen. Eine zeigt Mick Jagger mit einer Bibel in der Hand. Wyman gab dem Foto den Titel: „Mick auf der Suche nach Schlupflöchern.

American singer Mary Wilson and former Rolling Stones guitarist Bill Wyman checked out Southport’s “Vincent” hotel this afternoon (Wednesday 19th October 2011) following last night’s concert at Southport Theatre and Convention Centre where they performed live on stage.
Mary Wilson, of the The Supremes, joined Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings as a very special guest on their Back in the UK tour 2011. The tour ends in December.
68-year-old Mary gained fame as a founding member of the Motown female singing group The Supremes.
Mary is also an acclaimed jazz and blues singer, humanitarian, and successful political advocate for artist's rights.
Rising to fame during the Sixties, as a founding member of Motown Records. THE SUPREMES, alongside Diana Ross and Florence Ballard, MARY WILSON was the only constant member of the group from their incarnation as The New Supremes in 1970, until they disbanded in 1977. Wilson lays claim to the number-one hits , Baby Love, Stop, in the name of Love, Back in My Arms Again, and, You Can't Hurry Love, - to name but a few.
Bill said: I have admired Mary Wilson's talents since we first met in November 1964 during the TAMI Show. We have been friends since that time, and remain so. It's wonderful to have Mary join us onstage. I't been a fun tour so far and full of great music!

Die Musik, die Bill Wyman mit seinen Rhythm Kings, die ihren Namen übrigens zu Recht tragen, zelebriert, funktioniert am besten in der Live-Situation. Deshalb scheint es kaum verwunderlich, dass der ex-STONES Bassist ein weiteres Mal mit einem Konzertalbum aufwartet. "Live Communication" spiegelt die künstlerischen Fähigkeiten der Truppe Eins zu Eins wider. Das kommt natürlich nie in die Nähe von Spektakulärem, ein zünftiges Spektakel bleibt es aber allemal.
Wyman, der 1993 aus dem goldenen STONES-Käfig ausbrach, spielt inzwischen nur noch Musik die ihm Spaß macht, teilt, steuert und dosiert also alles selbst. Das macht ihm und seiner Band Freude und der Zuhörer erliegt diesem Enthusiasmus ganz schnell. Ein Konzert dieser Truppe würde ich garantiert auch gerne mal besuchen.
"Live Communication" bietet grundsoliden old-school Rhythm & Blues, Soul und gelegentliche jazzige Phrasen, samt messerscharfer und omnipräsenter Horn-Section. Wechselnde Lead-Vocalisten sorgen für zusätzliche Spannung. Wobei Wyman, neben seinen unbestritten guten Fähigkeiten am Bass als Sänger eher eine schwache Figur abgibt, die von den Protagonisten Dennis Locorriere (ex- Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show) und der dunkelhäutigen Soul-Chanteuse Beverly Skeete (Tom Jones, Robbie Williams, Jamiroquai) deutlich in den Schatten gestellt werden. Stargitarrist Albert Lee würzt das Ganze mit einigen erquickenden Kurz-Soli.
Die Set-List besteht größtenteils aus alten, lieb gewonnenen Bekannten, die jedoch gerne und sehr versiert in anderen Arrangements dargeboten werden. Unchain my heart, Johnny B Goode, Harlem Shuffle und I don't need no doctor klingen erfrischend anders. Das macht Spaß.
Diese gut 50 Minuten währende "Live Communication" aus der Konzertsaison 2008 darf man wohl ohne Einschränkungen Freunden des Rhythmn & Blues und Soul alter Schule ans Herz legen. Hier geht die Post ab.

Terry Taylor war auf dieser Tour auch dabei und hat auch einige Gesangsparts. Leider wird er in dieser CD-Kritik nicht aufgeführt. Lead vocals singt er z. B. oft bei "That´s better for me" und "Too late".

Famous for being the bass guitarist with the Rolling Stones, Bill Wyman has now come back to his musical roots with Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings, a nine-piece combo of virtuoso musicians.
On Tuesday night they played two-hour gig at Southport Theatre with a set comprising jazz, blues, soul, rockabilly and good old rock’n’roll. Supporting him were Graham Broad on drums, Terry Taylor on guitar, Geraint Watkins on piano, The brilliant Albert Lee on guitar, Georgie Fame on organ, Frank Mead and Nick Payn on horns, and Beverley Skeete on vocals.
The band, with various line-ups, has been going for 12 years, with the newest member, Geraint, playing with them for the past three years.
The night kicked off with a raucous rendering of Jitterbug Boogie followed by the delicious Beverley Skeete singing a soulful Tell Mama to a big band sound from the combo. Beverley has such range and her voice has that blues quality that keeps you mesmerised.
Each musician had his turn to foreground his expertise, especially Terry Taylor with amazing guitar riffs, and hornmen Frank Mead and Nick Payn who boogied the night away with full-bodied sound.
Georgie Fame, of the Blue Flames, on organ was in good voice, and seemed to be running the show. Bill Wyman, who mainly stood and played bass, took little part in the show and although he introduced the musicians, for the most part just stood and played looking totally disinterested though no doubt behind the scenes it is he who has put the whole show together. But it would have been nice to at least see him smile!
The star of the show was guest Mary Wilson of the Supremes and at 67 years, bopped around the stage and was such a spark of fun. Her voice is as good as ever with renderings of her great hits, Stop in the Name of Love, Dancing in the Street, and I Need Love. She interacted brilliantly with the audience and was in great shape for her age.
However, though this show had some brilliant spots, the main choice of music seemed a little samey. There were some dramatic interludes, like when Skeete sang It’s a Man’s World, showing off her great vocal skill, and the tender So Sad when Skeete duo-ed with Terry Taylor, bringing the evocative Everly’s hit a new poignancy.
Having Mary Wilson on the show lifted what could have been a rather run-of-the-mill set. There is no doubt that Wyman’s musicians are all masters of their art, but at times it seemed their playing could have meshed better.
As this is only the second gig in the run maybe this will change.

Der britische Folk-Musiker und Gitarrist Bert Jansch ist tot. Jansch sei am Mittwoch im Alter von 67 Jahren in einem Londoner Krankenhaus gestorben, teilte sein Sprecher mit.
Er litt seit 2009 an Lungenkrebs und hatte zuletzt Konzerte absagen müssen. Jansch gehörte zu den prominentesten Musikern der Folk-Bewegung in den 60er Jahren und war 1967 Gründungsmitglied der Band Pentangle. Ein Konzert der wiedervereinigten Band im August gehörte zu seinen letzten Auftritten.
Einen Namen machte sich Jansch vor allem als virtuoser Gitarrist. Er soll Vorbild unter anderem für Jimmy Page und Neil Young gewesen sein. Young verglich ihn einst mit Jimi Hendrix. Seinen ersten großen Erfolg feierte er 1965 mit seiner Platte «Bert Jansch», auf der auch einer seiner bekanntesten Songs «Needle Of Death» über den Tod eines Freundes erschien. Sein letztes Album «Black Swan» kam 2006 heraus.
Der aus dem schottischen Glasgow stammende Musiker hatte zuletzt mit seiner Frau Lauren in Nord-London gelebt. Bis in die 80er Jahre hatte er Alkoholprobleme. Er lag seit Anfang August im Krankenhaus.
